Canning Project

What do you do if you only own a freezer over your fridge?  You use shelves in the freezer, and you can EVERYTHING!!

So, I've been using shelves in my freezer for a long time.  It seems odd to me now to see people's freezers without them.  At one point, I had 3 whole chickens, 2 whole hams, 4 different frozen meals, 8-10 frozen vegetable packets, 2-3 (1 lb) tubes of hamburger, a bag of onion cubes, a bag of lemon juice cubes, a bag of garlic, 4 boxes of butter, a couple pounds of bacon, a gallon of milk, plus 4 trays of ice and a few other things I know I'm forgetting.  It didn't cost but about $10 for the wire shelves from W-mart.  You know, those white plastic covered wire ones?  They've served me well for the last 6 years at least!

Well, even with all that, I had started to run out of enough room in my freezer, so (after getting tired of using masking tape to hold my freezer door closed) I took to canning.  I learned how to can stew, so that is where I started.  Chicken stew.  I know, weird first canning project.  But chicken was on sale for $.59/ lb, and potatoes were buy five pounds get five free, and carrots were going bad in my fridge.  It seemed quite logical at the time.

The steps were fairly simple.  Peel and slice the potatoes and carrots, put them in.  Chop the chicken and put that on top.  Add the seasoning, add water to 1/2 way up the chicken since the chicken also makes its own juice.  Wipe off the top of the jar, add the pre-boiled lid and screw it down.  Then, I just turned the jar upside down, and sideways, while I shook it to be sure the seasoning was mixed in well.

Then, put the jars in cold water in the pot since they were cold and I didn't want to break them.  Boiled them in the pressure cooker until there was a good stream of steam, added the weight, and left it at pressure (mine is 15 pounds here on the coast) for 90 minutes before turning off the stove and allowing everything to cool.

And, VIOLA!!  Beautiful chicken stew.

When I use it, I will probably add a little more water and let it boil before adding thickener, but most of the work is done, and my freezer space can be used for other sales.

Since that first experience, I have also canned beef stew, chicken breasts, beans, and spaghetti sauce.  Beef stew is the same as this.  Chicken breasts, one pint is one pound (I am currently looking for half pint jars since we go easy on the meat here), add no water, and very little seasoning.  The chicken makes it's own juice.  For spaghetti sauce, I made my mother-in-law's recipe and canned it for a half hour in a water bath.  Beans, I learned what to do and what not to do.  Fill a 1 quart jar 1/3 full of dry beans.  Fill the rest of the way with water.  Let the beans soak overnight, drain and rinse before adding water, salt, and ham if you desire.  Pressure cooker, under pressure for 45 minutes.

It's been fun, and my husband says my bookshelf which serves as my "Pantry" now looks like a science lab.  I say that's fine as long as we have food for the winter!!!!  (and room in my freezer!)

So Much to Share.......

I have gotten SO busy, that I have forgotten to keep a written record of my life, and share with those who follow me.

Here goes.  Since I last posted a month ago, we have:

  • Had another revival, this one about the home.  The one single statement that sticks with me overall is, "Ladies, being a wife is like riding on the back seat of a motorcycle.  You have no control over it, you're in complete subjection to whatever the driver desires.  If you are only subject to them, you may reach over and try to control the bike yourself, but you know how well that goes.  However, if you submit by getting really close to the driver, and praying hard, you can actually enjoy the experience."  Gave me a brand new perspective on my life.
  • Gone to Florida for my cousin's wedding.  It was a grand old time!  My boys got to meet my aunt and uncles and grandmother.  We were able to spend more time with them, and the boys REALLY had a blast.  They were spoiled to death!!!
  • They had the opportunity to sit on Uncle Dave's Harley,

  •  Dress up like a biker gang

  • And swim to their heart's content.

  • While they were swimming one day, Aaron got out of the pool and took off his water wings while he played on the patio.  Forgetting he didn't have them on, he walked right down into the pool, and the water was over his head.  My Uncle Britt was watching them at the time, and said he was getting ready to get him out (having given him just enough time to be scared senseless so he wouldn't forget again), and as he went to get Aaron, Nate reached out, grabbed Aaron, and drug him over to the steps, placing his hand on the bar so Aaron could pull himself out of the water.   When Uncle Britt told Nate that he had saved his brother's life and he was a hero, Nate simply shrugged his shoulders and said, "He grabbed me first."   Well, if that wasn't funny enough, later on when my Mom was watching the boys, she called them out of said pool to get a drink.  Nate comes over, takes a HUGE drink and says, "Whew, Lifesaving is hard work!!!!"
  • Lets see, I also have experienced a LOT of canning lately!!  I'll put up a different post on that.  It is it's own story.
  • I'm trying to think if I forgot anything, but I think that catches us pretty much up to date.  Now to post about the Canning project.

For the Love of All Things Holy

Ever heard the statement used in a derogatory manner?  Or as a frustrated cry when things don't go correctly?

Well, this week, it has taken on a whole new meaning for me.  We are having revival meetings with Evangelist Mike Peletier and his family this week.  The messages have been a wonderful blessing to me.  I've interpreted for the deaf twice, and I had nursery last night, but God has done a pretty amazing thing in my life over the last few days.  That's sure.

Tuesday night's message was about making God "My GOD".   He started with Moses, in Exodus 3 when God calls him.  In there, God says, "I am the God of thy father Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob..." However, He never says "The God of Moses" until later when Moses had CHOSEN God for himself.  Bro Mike then went back into Genesis, and showed the same true at the calling of Abraham, the calling of Isaac, and the calling of Jacob.  He talked of how God will never be your personal God until you chose him for yourself.  And that you can choose him in salvation, but there's so much more to it.  He then turned over to Psalm 18:1-3, "I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.  The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.  I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies."

He then continued on with an explanation about a time in college, that that became more than just another verse to him.  He was looking for a particular need to be met, and God had answered him with these verses....  He also said that in his Bible, all the personal pronouns were circled, showing emphasis... here, read it again:
Psalm 18:1-3, "I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.  The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.  I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies."

It was just a good reminder for me, that he has to be MY God.  I have done that many times, but as of Wednesday, I needed that reminder I had gotten on Monday.  Then tonight, Thursday, Bro Mike preached about things that hinder a Christians life.  They were usual things, but what he said ABOUT them was exactly what I needed tonight, because of Wednesday.

Here's what he was talking about.... Sins that hinder....  Bitterness, Worry, and Hypocrisy.

Bitterness:  when that person's name enter's your mind, there is an immediate feeling of dislike, almost like a bad taste you remember when you remember a certain food.

Worry:  It tells your children that God is dead, or that he is a lie..... BECAUSE, if you really believed the things you claimed to believe when you were at church, then you wouldn't worry.... "your heavenly father knoweth that ye have need of these things".

Hypocrisy: can be the outward manifestation of saying one thing and doing another, but it starts out as an attitude of thinking that you're better than someone else.  That didn't convict me until he said, "have you ever looked at someone and thought, ' they think they're too good for everyone', then you are thinking you're better than they are because you're looking down on them for looking down on others.  You are now the hypocrite."  WOW!  Needed to hear that.

So, the love of things holy?  Holiness has taken a whole new meaning for me.  I may not be out in the world doing "all that bad stuff" but I am doing bad.... all by myself......... and that could keep someone else from stopping the "bad stuff" to follow the Saviour I claim to believe so strongly in.  Holiness is keeping my focus on my Heavenly Father, and allowing him to take care of others problems, and take care of me and my family and our needs.

Hope that makes some sense.  I wanted to write it down somewhere before I lost it from mind and couldn't go back and recover it.

Fess Up: Mount Washmore

So, my dirty little secret is I can't keep up with the laundry!

It doesn't matter how often I wash it.  In fact, I usually wash a load each day, very rarely skipping days (other than Sunday, and I make up for it Monday).  It's not the amount of loads that I wash that is the problem.  The problem is that I can't keep it folded and put away.  I try and try to fold it imediately after it comes out of the dryer, but it never seems to get done!!!  Why do we have to have so many clothes anyway??  I mean, couldn't I just keep one or two sets of Sunday clothes, a set of Wednesday clothes, and a couple of shorts outfits, and a couple of long pants outfits for each of the boys?? Then there wouldn't be so much laundry piling up!!

Now that our dryer is out, I need to hang every load as well.  And with homeschool starting up again, it is going to be interesting to get it all done.  Have to get the boys involved in folding and putting it away.  If I don't let it pile up so long, I may not feel so badly about getting them involved.  As it is, it might take them an entire day to help me fold what I have.

The entire couch, chair, and a couple of baskets are what I need to fold tonight.... should be fun!!!

Family Update

So, Here's a MAJOR answer to prayer!!

Doug got a call yesterday for a job, and he went today to fill out paperwork, and he goes tomorrow for orientation, and his first day!!  God is SO good!!  He provided more than we thought, better than he thought..... BECAUSE........... Here goes, Doug got a second job too..... Actually, I'll probably go to that one.

See, Doug's main job is from 3-12 in the evening, making it where he's home with our boys during the day.  Since they're homeschooled, it doesn't matter that he's gone in the evening.  We get to spend more of the awake hours with him!!

Because the second job is interpreting for Nancy (a deaf friend) at college, and it is only 10 hours a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I'll do that job to ensure that my husband doesn't miss an entire day with the boys twice a week.  I'll do school with them in the evening while Doug is gone to finish up whatever is left after whatever I can do in the mornings before I go to interpret.

God has been VERY good to us, and provided each of our needs up until he gave us jobs again!!  He has not let us go hungry, or without.  How do you thank a God that good????

Family Update

It's been a while since I logged in here to type, so here goes...

We've been working on moving my Mother-in-law into a smaller, more suitable apartment for her now that Dad's gone.  We've gone through all the things in her home, and are selling things at the Flea Mall on Saturday.  She's only been out of her house for a day, and I already miss having her nearby.  I'm thinking of moving into her apartment building.... Not really, since I have a house and all, but I really, REALLY miss her.

Next, Because Mom is selling Dad's tools on Saturday, I've been working on making the boys toddler beds into bunk beds.  I know, crazy, but they turned out pretty nice, if I say so myself!!

I also am working on putting up shelves in the boys room, so I can put up the important stuffed animals, and trophies they earned in tee-ball.  I moved Andrew into the same room with the two little guys so that I could make Andrew's old room into a play/ school room.  As of now, all that is in the "Bed Room" are beds, dressers, and shoes.  The toys are all in the "Play Room".  I like it this way.  Leaves only one room to try to clean up at lunch and bed time.

Homeschool?  Well, I ordered all my books as of yesterday.  I really liked the way that the BJU Math was last year for Aaron and Nate, so I ordered K-5 for Aaron this year, 1st for Nate, and 2nd for Andrew.  I didn't order the tests, or the curriculum, because I noticed last year that they had a "Chapter Checkup" every section that I could use for a test, and I could get the speed drills that I want from online or make them myself.  It was less money that I had to spend, and more that my boys could do with me.   For Phonics/ Language, I went with A Beka.  I think it is the best Phonics curriculums out there!!  And since reading and addition/ subtraction/ multiplication/ division are the base for all else that you learn in school, I want the best!!  I did have to buy the test book for 2nd grade Phonics, but I already had the one for 1st grade, and it can really be taken very easily on paper.   For Reading, I have the A Beka readers that were given to me, and I can't wait for the boys to get into them.  Nate should be reading really well by the end of the school year, and I'm looking forward to seeing him go!

For Science/ History/ and Health, we are going to be looking up subjects on the internet.  Should prove to be fun.  Gonna try to do some experiments as we go along.

Business, I'm slowly but surely working on my courage.  I really LOVE this business.  I've never in my life been so pushed, stretched and pulled into the shape that would please my Heavenly Father.  I've become a better me, and can't wait to see what else God has for me (although I am a little scared as well).

Lets see, I also have been rearranging the house as I go along, and folding a mound of laundry that is the size of the couch. It's quite depressing, actually.  But, I'm fixing to watch a sweet romantic movie while I fold late into the night.

Oh, and I dyed my hair for the very first time in my life.  It is a light auburn, and it looks pretty nice.  I'm still not used to it, but I like it, and Doug does too, so we'll see.

There's the update.  Busy as always, and tomorrow will be more-so.

Swimming

The boys have been swimming in the pool for most of the summer days we have had.

They have become much braver about going under the water and opening their eyes under the water.

Aaron is the one who has surprised me the most.  He has (prior to this summer) been almost drowned on three separate occasions.  Ok, he was closely monitored, he just has this habit of diving out of the inner-tube he has been placed in, and into water that is far above his head.  He has, however, done a wonderful job of  adjusting to playing in the water and not drowning himself.  He has even gone in a three foot swimming pool and, since the pool comes to about his eye level, he will walk around, occasionally jumping up to catch his breath before walking some more.

Both of the older two have been doing wonderful as well, Andrew can now float on his back, as well as swimming short distances.  He can't get his face out of the water to breathe while he is swimming, so no deep end for him quite yet.  Nate can almost float on his back, but he is still working on it.  They are all doing really well, and I'm very thankful for my parents giving it to us.  God is so good, and he continues to meet each need before we quite know we need it.

Right now, it is a crazily cool summer day, with highs supposed to be being around 80*. So today, I will sit here under my clothesline, watching my boys play soccer and on the swingset.  I will thoroughly enjoy having the windows open and the fresh breeze coming through my home.  God has been good, summer will be fun, and life can only go uphill from here.

On the Lighter Side

OK, this is kind of morbid humor, but I don't want to forget it... ever.

We went to a private family viewing at the funeral home a few days after Dad passed away.  As we got out of the van, Aaron said, "What's this place?"  Daddy answered, "It's the funeral home."  Aaron: "Why are we here?"  Daddy: "Because this is where they took Papa's body."  Aaron: "Oh........ (long pause while he thought about that) ................ Where'd they put his head?"

The Good Wife

Things that happen are not in our control, but our attitude always is in our control.

Dad Clark went to live with the Lord this last Tuesday,  June 8th, at 5:20 in the morning.   Time since then has both dragged and stalled, if that makes any sense at all.
It seems like yesterday, I was watching him talk to Momma.  He looked at her, and said, "It's been a good life, right Bridgie?" (See, Dad always called Mom "Bridgette", even though her real name was Dolores, because he said she was prettier than Bridgette Bordeaux, a pin-up girl of their generation).   Mom got all choked up and said, "Yup, it's been pretty good."  He says, "We haven't been too rich, but it was a good life."  She says, "It was a great life!"  I saw tears in his eyes.  This man who never even said "I love you."  This man who for all the time I have known him, has told me 4-5 times that he loved me... two of those were this last week or so.  This man who shocked his son into realizing how close to death he was by saying "I love you."
He was an amazing man.  Watching my husband grieve for his dad has wrenched my heart in half.  Trying to be there if he needs me, but stay out of his way when he doesn't ... this has been my hardest challenge.  It has been hard to stay close without smothering him.  To give him his space while letting him know I was there if he needed.
Among all this happening, our dryer has also gone out.  It has been a good dryer, given to us 9 years ago for our wedding.  So, since we have no extra money for a dryer right now, and since we have other things that need the money we do have, I went out and invested $25 into a clothesline.  I just had to buy the eye screws and the rope and clothespins, since God made our trees close enough together that we can string lines between them.
And my attitude?  I think God has given me more grace over the last two weeks than I have had in all my life before.  My theme verse has to be either, "My grace is sufficient for thee" from I Corinthians 12, or "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him" from Psalm 37.  God has worked so much out, and I'm resting.  Not just about this, but about so much more.  It has been an amazing thing to watch God do the work while I am waiting.
God has been good, life has been bittersweet, and the future is as promising as my attitude of the moment.  Praying, and waiting, and hoping and watching, and longing for what God has in store.  Ready to look at the future and see it now.

Lessons Learned from taking it easy

So, I hurt my back on Tuesday of last week, and haven't really been myself ever since.  I have learned a few lessons in life since then.

1. People will get along just fine without you there.

2. The house may not be clean, but every little boy can find food for themselves.

3. Husbands are very inventive with food when their wives are sick.  They will eat their "comfort foods" (in our case, pizza) every other day, whether you like it or not.

4. The laundry will get washed, maybe even folded, but it will be sitting in the living room waiting for you when you're better.

5. The way you feel worries your husband senseless and adds to his burden.

6. Trying to be less of a burden makes your husband frustrated, because he doesn't feel like he is taking good enough care of you.

7. Keeping up with the house is not going to happen, but it gives extra time to spend with the ones who matter most.

Laundry

Does anyone else hate this invention????

I hate laundry.  I hate washing a load each day, I hate having so much to fold and put away.  I hate that it is never done.  I hate that as soon as it is done, there is more to do.  Oh, and did I mention that I hated it??

However, as much as I hate it, I am thankful for the opportunity to live in America, with the opportunity to have as many different articles of clothing as I have.  I'm thankful to have the three little men God gave me to raise for Him.  I'm thankful for the wonderful husband that God has given me as well.  If that means a little extra laundry, well then, bring it on.  I'll turn on Pride and Prejudice and fold away....  Now if only my back felt better.   Guess that gives me the excuse I need to take breaks here and there.  :)

So I'm Thinking....

I'm thinking of using my creative genes and writing a story.

Not just any romance story.  I'm so sick of reading everyone's stories of how people meet and fall in love.  That's the easiest part of any relationship.  The spring is an easy time to have a garden.  The hard part is keeping it going into the summer, and even harder to keep it all the way into the fall and winter.  The same with marriage.  It's not hard to fall in love with someone.  The hard part is keeping that love alive.

So, I'm thinking of writing a book, with the stories of 5 or 6 different women, and the difficulties they face as they work to STAY in love with their men.  It seems that people learn things better through illustration.  Even Jesus used parables (stories) to teach truths to people.

I don't know if I'll follow through, or if I'll just write a little here and there when I'm frustrated, but I am planning to write a really neat, interwoven book.  I have already determined that I can devote 30 minutes each day to doing something.  If it works out that I have longer, then that's fine, but at least 30 minutes each day.

We'll see how this goes.

I hold onto the Light

Darkness holds no power when I hold on to the Light. How can I help but worship Him when I discover that immense truth?

I was reading on a different blog today, and she passed along a devotional that she had read.  It was just what I needed to hear today.  Here I am, stuck in bed, can't go very far, or help to serve my family.  I hurt my back two days ago... I was trying to catch a clock that was falling from the wall.... Not just any clock.... THE clock... The clock that Doug's dad received on his retirement from GM... THE clock that is Doug's inheritance.  I didn't catch it, the glass cover for the clock broke, and I was left with a broken clock and a twisted back from trying to do something nice for my husband.

Needless to say, I was ready to throw a pity party for all of the last two days.  Then, today, actually tonight, when I'm supposed to be sleeping, I find this devotional. She used  Romans 12:1   I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. She went on to talk about when you don't feel like worshiping God.  She shared a story about a time when her son was in the hospital, and things were crashing down around her... no insurance, little hope, and the drunk driver at fault was dead.  She had nothing to thank God for, but she found it in the midst of her trouble.  She presented herself to God in spite of the fact she would rather have blamed him.  She was able to thank Him that He was still in control.  She then made the statement that I started with: "Darkness holds no power while I hold onto the Light."

From that, I draw strength.  My world may feel lost and confused, but He is the Light, and I can depend on His guidance through the frustrating and confusing times I have to face!!!

An Expected End

Never before have the words "an expected end" brought such comfort.

One of my absolute favorite Bible verses is Jeremiah 29:11, which says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to bring you to an expected end."

There have been many times throughout my life, since I found that verse in college, that it has brought me comfort.  When I was unmarried and waiting for a spouse, it was comforting to know that God had a man all picked out, and was directing our ways toward one another step by step.  Then, after I was married, and no longer wanting to teach, it was comforting to know that God had a plan through the chaos of teaching.  Then as I REALY wanted to have a baby, it was comforting to know that God had events lined up to give me the perfect children at the perfect time.  (well, maybe they're not PERFECT, but perfect for us).  As I've taught and trained our sons, it's been comforting to know that God has a path all laid out for their lives, and that He knows every pitfall they will face along the way.

Yet, as I sit today, and mull over the events of the past two weeks, that verse has been a comfort as much through these weeks as it has in my entire past put together.  Doug had lost his job officially a couple of months ago.  Then he lost his second job.  The money we're living on is slowly dwindling, and soon it will be time for him to work again.  The business we are building is not going as quickly as we would like.  BUT, just yesterday, we found out that Doug's dad has- on the outside- a year to live.  Doug only has a short while left with his Daddy, and I am SO  thankful for all the time he has been able to spend with him in the last six months.  Looking back, I can see God has had it planned since the beginning of time that this is the way it would be.  I am so very thankful that Doug has been able to spend so much of his dad's last days with him.  As hard as the knowing that the end is near.... the comfort of knowing Doug has something special to remember is so much better.

Soon, it will be time to build a business and work like crazy.  Now, it is time to rest in God's care, knowing that HE has "an expected end" planned out for us.

Kids and Their Thought Process

So, I made some really good granola cereal yesterday! It turned out very nicely, and there was enough for everyone for breakfast with 4 large jars left over.

I got the recipe from one of my favorite blogs here: at Homestead Revival.  The only thing I do really different is to add dried fruit of any kind to it.  We really enjoy dried apples and dried berries.

Well, now for the kid thing.  We're eating granola that I made, with milk, and Nate-Nate pipes up, "Momma, when I grow up, I want you to teach my wife how to make this." I say OK, 'cause I'm feeling good about this, when he says, "Cause my kids need to grow up strong and healthy, and my wife needs it, but I'm not gonna eat it, cause I don't like it."

Yeah, look at you laughing!!  Now try to imagine keeping a straight face and rebuking said son about thankfulness.  See how hard my job is???  But I do get the grand opportunity to tell you about it and sit here smiling since he can't read it and know how funny it was.

The Wedding

This time, it was Nate-Nate who came up with the hillarious line.

As we were walking a mile path this morning, we came to a part where the honeysuckle had fallen and covered the path where we were walking.  Nate-Nate piped up and said, "Look, Mommy, somebody had a wedding here!!"  It was so sweet and innocent.  We were at about the 1/2 mile marker of a whole mile, and the place would have been a pretty place for a wedding, so it wasn't entirely off the wall, but it was cute.

By Doug

So, I just learned something, and I thought the whole world should know.

My eldest son Andrew asked me what language this movie was in. I said I don't know. He answered me with I hope it is in "Idahoian", I said what is that, he responds what they speak in Idaho. I tell him they speak English, and he responds again, good, then I hope the movie is in "Idahoian". I love children's inagination.

From the Mouth of Babes TWO

Aaron Micaiah is one of the craziest little boys I know.  He makes me laugh so often.

The other day, he was eating tacos when all the sudden he pipes up, "Mommy, I know the Abraham Lincoln song!!"  So I told him to finish his dinner and he could sing it for me.  While he was eating, he began to sing, "Father Abraham, had many sons...."  FUNNY!!

Then, he was sitting by the window "reading" a book, when he piped up, "Mommy, I'm gonna be a Daddy soon!!!!!"  I said "WHAT?!?!?!?"  He says, "See look," (pointing to his arm) "I have little hairs, and Daddy's have big hairs.  When my hairs get long enough, then I'll be a DADDY!!!"

They never warned me how much I would laugh at my children.... they really should put that in the manual.

How does God Do It??

Do you ever marvel at the goodness of God?  Marvel at what He does in your life, and how he pieces everything together?

I have marveled again and again over the last month at the way God has pieced together our lives to bring glory to Himself, and to work things for our good.  There has been food provided when it was needed, money that came from goodness knows where, beautiful weather to open windows and turn off the heat, customers that were never contacted by us.  There are so many things that have happened in the last month that only GOD could have put together.

I know that He has a plan for us, and that He is bringing it about in His time and way, but right now, I'm enjoying marveling at the little things along the way.  Watching God work is enough to keep me singing all day long.  It's not by my might or power, it's through His Spirit!!

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord: thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to bring you to AN EXPECTED END." Jeremiah 29:11

Trust Me, I Know What I'm Doing

Have you ever uttered those words??  I have, a lot.  With a 6 year old that's going on 45, I have to constantly tell him I'm smarter than he is.

Well, here lately, Doug and I have been on the receiving end of those words.  Since Doug officially lost his job last month, then lost his secondary job today, we are learning in a whole new way how to trust our Heavenly Father, and that He really does know what He's doing.

God has met every need, right on time, in a more amazing way than we could imagine.  As Doug and I continue to trust our Heavenly Father to provide and lead, it's a comfort to know that He really does know what He's doing!!

"For I know the thoughts that I think of you, saith the Lord.  Thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to bring you to an expected end." Jeremiah 29:11

Nathaniel Bruce

Now for my Nate-Nate.

Of all three of my little men, he's the one that goes un-noticed the most.  He's shy and quiet, so he sits contentedly in the background when one of the other two is near by.  He is, however, one of the key ingredients in the friendship of the other two, because he is a peace-maker when the two other boys butt heads.

Much to Andrew's dismay, Nate lost 2 teeth in one day (the day of our big snowstorm), robbing him of his defining "grown-up" feature that he was able to lord over the others.  On top of that, Andrew has lost only one tooth, and Nate has lost two.

Nate has been very kind about the whole thing, though, reminding Andrew he has a new tooth coming in already, and that he is still older.

Nate is ... special.  I've never met a little man so focused when he wants to be.  He can do amazing things, yet he chooses to let his brothers show off, without so much as sticking his own accomplishments out there.  He is content to play second fiddle.  I'm sure, when he gets to an age that testosterone is flowing, it may change a little, but I see him very content with being in the background most of his life.

He is in kindergarten at home this year, which really amazes me, since he didn't seem to have much interest in it before this year.  I went into this school year thinking to keep him busy, and letting him catch whatever he caught.  He has continually amazed me by doing better than I expected.  He is more adept in math than in phonics and reading, but he is doing great in those, so I'm not worried.

Of all of Nate's wonderful characteristics, I think the most noticeable is his love for animals and younger children.  If we're at the park, he'll find a littler child, and encourage them to do the things they're scared of.  If there is any animal, anywhere, he will sit right down with it and make sure they're friends before he leaves.  With our dog, Brownie, he is, I think, her favorite.  He is so calm and caring.  I can see him doing very well as a veterinarian.

So, that's my Nate.  He is a blessing, no matter which way I look at it.  I love having him around each and every day.  I'm thankful for his thoughtfulness and his kindness.  I'm thankful that our Heavenly Father knows what is best for us, and plans our lives in such a way as to remind us of his goodness each and every day.

Does Life ever Surprise You??

Does life ever surprise you??  I don't mean just the complex stuff, but simple, somewhat stupid things as well??  It certainly surprises me.

What am I talking about?  I know that if you're reading, you're thinking that.  But, really, has something occured to you that was such a simple concept, it amazed you that thinking about it amazed you??

Here's my simple, somewhat stupid discovery as of late.  I am amazed that when you go seeking for answers, you find them.  I know. Blonde, but true.  It amazes me that for 30 years of my life, I went along without wondering what really made me tick.  Here in the last two years of my life, I've learned more about myself than I learned in all the 30 previous years combined.  And all I did was start to look for the answers.

For instance, my marriage is one of the top 20% of the marriages in the world.  It has been a wonderful since the beginning, almost 9 years.  But, I knew I could do some things to make it better.  So I went looking for information.  I found Created to be His Helpmeet, which helped me to realize that JOY was the thing that draws your husband to you.  After that, I found Just for Women, which helped me to learn about how guys think, and how to understand my husband better.  After that, I found Secrets of Fascinating Womanhood, which taught me the two most important things about my husband and his thoughts (first, that he wants to be accepted, and second that he wants to be admired).  Ok, I know, PATHETIC!!  Things I knew over here in my brain, but they'd never moved over there to connect with my thoughts and actions toward my husband.

Second thing I've learned:  I've always been an insecure person, and also, I have a tendency to be negative.  Found out a couple days ago through an overheard conversation that the two things are linked.  Made sense as soon as I heard it.  Everyone I know that is negative is also insecure.  And vice versa.

Third thing I've learned:  God is good.  He provides in ways beyond my understanding.  He brings things into our lives when nothing else will do.  He nurtures, cares for, and prunes us as an award winning gardener would do with their prized plants. And if we step back and allow Him to work, he does a work in those around us that is far better than we could do ourselves (and He changes us, so that we fit them better, too).  God has amazed me in all that he has brought about in our lives to draw us closer to HIM.

And lastly, I've learned how important I am to God.  Of all the katrillion things He has created, He chose mankind to love and send His Son to die for.  Of all the massive stars, and moons, and comets, and space rocks, and galaxies God made, He chose to breathe life into one little insignificant human body.  He chose to let that human have a free will, even when He for-knew that that human would sin.  Of all the babies that have been born, or miscarried, or born with handicaps, He chose to make me born perfectly healthy.  Of all the families on earth that He could put me in, He put me into the one that would take me to church every Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night to hear about Him.  Of all the Principals in the world, He gave me one who would love me, even when I was in the wrong, and would show me what the love of God is like.  Of all the men in the world, He gave me one that I could best complete without feeling too stretched, or too limited.  Of all the children in the world, He gave me three little wonderful men to raise to be HIS servants.  When I think through all the things He lined up, just so my life could take place.... I stand AMAZED.

So, I ask you again, Does life ever surprise you?  Do you ever stop to think just HOW GOOD God is to you?  It certainly surprises me.

Getting to the Heart of it All

The thing that has been in my heart and mind the most here lately is the HEART.

The Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

And it Proverbs 23:26, it says, "My son, give ME thine heart..."

It seems to me that God is saying, "You really don't know what you want, TRUST ME."  In fact, he does say something to that effect in Proverbs 3:5, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto THINE OWN understanding."

It's been something amazing to watch God do a work in our family.  Some days, I'm ready to quit, but each day, God either encourages me, or points out something new to change, depending on what I need at that moment.

All of that to say, it bothers me when I look at so many people in the church, who are VERY active, DOING all the right things, but complaining about it, or fussing about all the work they do that goes un-noticed, or complaining about being "under-appreciated".

I mean, wasn't the point in the first place to do things for GOD??  And doesn't He see you WHEREVER you are??? And doesn't He say to not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing???  Since when is it wrong to go un-noticed??  I feel so awkward when people tell me I've done something right.  Isn't that the way it's supposed to be??

It breaks my heart that so many FUNDAMENTAL, INDEPENDENT BAPTISTS are so bitter.  So utterly twisted inside that they are the inspiration for the "Grumblers Song".  If I'm not doing what I do at church for the Lord, to serve HIM, WHY am I doing it??

It's a question that I haven't quite answered, but it's something that has weighed heavily on my mind.  It's not as if I haven't been there.  I did complain, a lot, about some of my ministries, and whether or not they are important.  But since I gave much of it back to God, and let Him have control, and delegated some of what I do to others who were looking for something to do, my life has been much better.

I can honestly say now that I LOVE what I GET to do for God.  HE takes care of the details, and I just follow.

So I guess my question is: If you go to the heart of what you do, what do you see there??  Are you doing it for show, so everyone thinks you're a wonderful person? Or are you truly enjoying serving God to the best of your ability??  No matter where it is: home, school, church, grocery store, cleaning bathrooms..... WHY are you doing it?  Is it to BE a blessing or is it to GET a blessing??  Are you being SELFISH in your service, or are you doing UNSELFISHLY??

Blogs I follow and why

So, I'm putting this down more for myself than for anyone else (since I have SO many followers) *eye roll*

I follow eleven different blogs and enjoy each one for a specific reason.

An Abiding Place: My friend from college (who I remember as Miss McSherry) puts down thoughts kind of like my own blog.  I follow it mostly to keep up with what is going on in her life.  Some of her ideas, I steal, but since that is more of a personal blog, I won't add a link.

Heavenly Homemakers:  Ms. Laura is a kindred spirit, and I enjoy reading everything she puts down.  From recipies (which I have stolen for use in my home) to friendly advice, to more natural eating, to homeschooling FOUR little boys.  I can't tell you how valuable I find her information.  I read everything she puts out, every morning.  Some articles I have favorited, and return to them often.  Her site is: http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/

Keeper of the Home: She has really good tips for gardening and I enjoy her upbeat, positive attitude.  Her husband has cancer, if I'm reading it right, and yet she still takes the time to pass on information.  Her site is: http://www.keeperofthehome.org/

Keeping of Time:  She has three little girls, about the same ages as my three little boys, and I enjoy hearing their adventures (living vicariously, I guess) and I also enjoy looking at her art projects and aquiring the ideas.  Her site is: http://keepingoftime.blogspot.com/

New Life on a Homestead:  This is one of my favorites.  She and her husband just started a homestead that utilizes less electricity and does more things from scratch.  I enjoy reading the "mishaps" and trials and tribulations that I would no doubt do the exact same way.  She is hilarious!!  Her site is: http://newlifeonahomestead.com/

Passionate Homemaking:  I love this one because she deals with everything home-making related.  Everything from cooking naturally to good appliances, to husband-wife relationships, to ideas for children.  Her site is:  http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/

Preschoolers and Peace:  She usually has good ideas to use with Aaron, and for now, her daughter is in the hospital, pretty messed up.  So, for now, it tells me what to pray about.  Her site is: http://www.preschoolersandpeace.com/

River Rock Cottage:  Just found her site, but I'm enjoying her things about home-school.  Her four girls are older than my boys, but with her experience, I'm learning some valuable lessons about home-school.  Her site is: http://riverrockcottage.blogspot.com/.  However, she just recently moved to http://homesteadrevival.blogspot.com/ and is doing a give-away until noon on Saturday, Feb 13th.  I'm really enjoying the information she is sharing on the new site.

The Royalty Review:  It's the blog of a friend from college.  Her's is a private blog.  I follow it for everything from pictures of her kiddos, to info on what she's up to nowadays, to thoughts from the Bible, to funny quotes.  She's just fun to follow.  Sorry, no link.

So, there you have it.  Blogs that I follow... why I follow them.

My "New" Stand Mixer

Isn't God good??  He always comes through right on time, with the perfect solution.

I have just now started making bread more often, and it is hard to do with kneading so much.  It takes much of my time to do it, and it makes such a huge mess!!!

Well, yesterday morning, my sister-in-law called to tell me that she had just gotten a larger mixer, and that I was welcome to her old one if I would like it.  I told her I would try it, and tonight I did.

Here is a couple of pictures of it:

I made bread with the dough mixers, and they are WONDERFUL!!!!!  I have never seen making bread so easy!!  Because it is an older blender, one of the mixers does fall out, but what is that to the workout of kneading from scratch???

One of the loaves I made was apple, raisin, cinnamon bread.  It was VERY yummy!!!

Now, I get to make more bread for my wonderful family, and be an even bigger blessing to them!!!!  God is SO good!!!!!

Send HIM a Valentine

I am jumping on board a Valentine challenge from a friend of mine, Deena Royalty, which she posted in her blog.

"This year I am deciding to post each Friday in February to let you all in on the happenings here on Haywood to hopefully inspire and challenge you use Valentine's this year as an excuse to celebrate ALL MONTH, smothering your spouse with affection and having a ton of fun yourself.

You up for it???  Good!

Ok here's my romantic plan. Now by romantic I mean, "Fun, cheap, and special to us." What's romantic to us is quite possibly hilarious to you and vice versa. Who cares! Just have fun!"

Funds are tighter than your momma's girdle, so I have to do things that will be inexpensive and fun all at once.  I'll be using mostly what I have here, with only very limited additions from outside.  We'll see how things add up in the end.

I'm going to follow her gameplan of following the little childhood rhyme: "I love you in big ways, I love you in small ways, I love you this minute, and I'll love you always."

For the "big ways"- Tomorrow.... Let's see, I can... something big...  I can make a card from my scrapbook stuff, make a picinic dinner for us to take to the beach, have my mom watch the boys for the evening, then pick up the boys and hang out with them for the evening.

For the "small ways"- I can get up and make him a good breakfast before he heads off to work, and hand it to him with a second hand-made card.  He really likes a ham egg and cheese biscuit (all home-made, of course).  I can make sure the boys and I look nice when he comes home from work and that we have a really nice evening planned for him.

For "this minute", I can make a third card, and ........ have songs about minutes and love lined up to play in the background and make a candle-lit dinner for us.

For "always", I can.....  I don't know.  HELP!!!!  I'll keep thinking on this.  It will be good for me to do.

Swagbucks

OK, so I've heard about these from two different people, and I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything.  I'll also post this on Facebook.

Swagbucks is a toolbar that you use as a search engine, and from what I've heard, the more people you tell about them, the more you get in return.  I'm utterly confused right now, since I have the same three swagbucks I received when I signed up.  Don't know how else to get them.  I learned some about them here:

http://newlifeonahomestead.com/2010/01/have-you-signed-up-for-swagbucks-yet/

and here:

http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/using-swagbucks-and-amazon-cards-for-organic-groceries

and here:

http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/another-happy-swagbucks-promotion

I don't know quite what to think, and was wondering if anyone could help me out.  Thanks.

God is SO GOOD!!

Isn't it amazing that, just when you need Him most, God comes through in a greater, more unbelievable way than you could possibly imagine??

Today, I needed to run by the store for two things that we needed: oil and honey.  I had exactly $5.93 to make the food fit into.  I prayed about it, and off we went.  I got inside, and went for the oil.  There was a smaller container there (half the size I normally buy) for $2.49.  Great!  That was almost half of the money that I had to spend.  And that was without tax.  And honey was sure to be more expensive.

So, I sent a quick prayer heavenward, and started glancing around to see if there was anything on sale (that was the store brand, so I wasn't holding out much hope).  I looked down at the size of oil that I usually buy, and it was only $2.39!!!  WHAT???  I was really confused, so I looked around to be sure that I was right.  Sure enough, twice the oil, $.10 cheaper.  Ok, Thank you LORD!!  And off we went to buy the honey.

After walking in circles a few minutes, I found the honey.  The cheapest of which was $3.49.  Added together with the oil, it was $5.90.  It only left me $.03 for tax.  That wouldn't be enough.  So I looked again, and prayed.  There, right beside the cheapest one, was a bottle of Sue Bee honey.  It was $4.25.  More expensive.  I was about to look away, when it was almost as if God took my head inbetween his hands and said "LOOK!!"  On the front, was a coupon for $1.00 off.  Instant savings!!  WOOHOO!!!

All that to say, God answers prayer.  I have $.15 left over from my grocery store trip.  Also, while we were outside, I met up with a friend who gave me some strawberries, some grapes, some apples, and a cheesecake.

What's that verse???  "Now unto him that is able to do EXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY ABOVE all that we could ask or think......"  AMEN

Baking Bread

SO, you ever get to the end of your breadmaking and it DIDN'T turn out right AT ALL?????

I did, all the time.  It was frustrating.  My husband said that he liked my bread, but I hated that it turned out so heavy and flat, instead of the nice fluffy loaves I saw everyone else being able to make.  It's something that frustrated me often, especially when one loaf would rise all nice and beautiful, and the other would remain almost as flat as when I started.

Nine years later, my wonderful husband still brags on my bread, but it frustrates me beyond belief that I can't get the results I'm looking for.  SO, I went on a search at one of my favorite blogs, and I found this:

http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/how-to-make-whole-wheat-bread-tutorial

Found out that the whole time I was making bread, I was adding water that was too hot (killing some of the yeast I was putting in) and that I wasn't kneading the bread enough (hence, the reason that only one of the loaves of bread would rise).  Now, I made a new batch today, and LOOK HOW IT TURNED OUT!!!!

Ain't they BEAUTIFUL?!?!?!?!?!?  The loaf in the front (at the bottom) is a Chocolate Swirl loaf.  I learned that recipie from the same website here:

http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/chocolate-swirl-bread-oh-yes-i-did-just-say-chocolate

Hope you get to enjoy her recipies. If not, you are SO missing out!!  And Ms. Laura, if you actually read this, THANKS!!

Starting Over

Isn't it amazing to you that every day, we get a "do-over"?

I'm so glad of that.  Without the "do-over's" I get every day, I don't know if my life would be livable.  I wish I had done so many things differently, but I get to start over today.  Fresh and new.

Doug and I are reading a book called The Traveler's Gift.  In it, he goes to many different places in history, and talks to different people while he's there.  Just a couple, he speaks to Anne Frank, and from her learns the truth that happiness is a choice.  Just as complaining is a choice.  By choosing not to complain, and choosing to be happy, you make your life a better place.  Then, another stop he makes is to talk to Abraham Lincoln.  There, he learns to forgive others for the things they have done to hurt him, and himself for his mistakes.  That one hit me hard.

I can not move forward without forgiving myself for the past.  I have determined to do that, and to move ahead with my life doing the best I know how to serve and love those in my life, and those closest to me.  One day at a time, one thing at a time.

By forgiving myself, I give myself the freedom to move ahead and do what I know needs to be done.  Sounds really "new age" to me, but it is in the Bible as well.  In Philippians.  "Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."  Now I'm doing just that.

Clark Update

SO, I haven't posted in a while, but there HAVE been loads of things going on here.

Doug and I are building our own business, and while we don't see it as selling, many people are turned off simply by the fact that we own a business.  So, We've taken to calling it "marketing."  We "endorse" a wonderful line of products that were green before green was the thing to be.  They're healthy and affordable for the organic customer.  There.  That's my sales pitch.  I really do LOVE the products we have, and am looking forward to helping others find those that work for them as well.  (Not to say that if you read this I want you to inquire...and not to say I wouldn't let you if you did... Just updating!!) :P  We're really excited about the group we are with, their morals, their stand, their helpfulness, their servant-leadership, their ability to push you to the limit.  It's like the NFL.  You can be in a college league, or in an "arena" league, or you could even be a player in the NFL; but if you're not on the team that wins the Super Bowl, you're not a winner... at least not in football. Same with business.  There are many different marketing ideas out there, but unless you're playing in the best marketing system, on the best team, you don't have as much oportunity for winning.  OK, off my hobby horse now.

The boys and I are SO far behind in Homeschool.  It's been a hectic month, the month of December.  We hardly were at home at all.  The schooling is going well, however, and Nate is reading a few sentences at a time now.  SO proud of him.  Andrew is working on his math families, and that is going steadily, if a little slower than I had planned or imagined.  All the other subjects, he is doing really well in.  He hasn't ever lacked in English or vocabulary, so I expected him to catch onto that fairly quickly.  He is starting to learn cursive writing next Monday, and he is SO excited about that.  Aaron is actually doing pretty well too.  He is working on learning the letters, and I would say he catches on to half as much as Nate.  At three and a half... He's doing SUPER!!  He is also working on a half a lesson a day in a book I LOVE!!  It is called Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.  It goes slowly enough that they catch on well, and at the end, they are reading at a public school 2nd grade level (it does use phonics of a kind, and it is SUPER EASY to follow.  The boys have not had any trouble at all going between that and the things that I have from A Beka).  Nate does a lesson a day, and is now half way through it.  I intend to do A Beka phonics with Nate next year, so that should cover anything that he has trouble catching onto in Kindergarten.

Lets see... other than that, the only big news is that Doug is on the job market again.  Without going into all the details, he is now persuing a career in Sign Language.  He is at school every Thursday to learn what he needs to know to be an interpreter for larger functions.  He is really excited about pursuing it , and I am getting excited about where it will lead.  God has provided every need along the way, and He continually amazes me as to what all He can do.  I know, shame on me for not trusting Him more.  But He is good to us.

There's the update as to what we've been up to .  Hopefully I 'll be back sooner, rather than later.
